It is common knowledge that HIV is transmitted through three ways: blood transfusion, needle sharing and se.xual intercourse. But this woman contracted the disease in a very unusual way. Read on and find out if you are at risk.
An unnamed 20-year-old Brazilian woman claims that she was infected by HIV last year through sharing manicure equipment.
She found out she had HIV after donating blood. When her blood was tested it was discovered that she had a significant amount of viral load, although she denied getting infected by se.xual intercourse or needles.

Her mother was also tested but the result was negative. They remembered an incident 10 years ago when they shared manicure tools with a cousin. Unbeknownst to her during that time, the cousin later on discovered that she was HIV-positive.
Researches took the woman and her cousin’s blood samples to analyze. They found out that the genetic material from both samples was related. Thus, it is possible that the virus was transmitted through the manicure equipment that they shared.

Nail grooming equipment, as of now, is not included in the list of possible HIV-transmitting mechanisms according to Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to the authors of the study, “HIV is not transmitted by casual contact, such as sharing eating utensils, or drinking from the same water glass. This transmission of HIV by shared manicure equipment is a very rare event that should serve not to make people fear HIV or contact with HIV-infected people.”
I do hope that people will also think twice about sharing nail grooming tools for hygienic purposes. HIV has no cure yet, but by being responsible and careful one can avoid getting infected.
